Surbhi Sapru: Can you tell us about your childhood and your inclination towards classical music?
Ragini Rainu: Absolutely! Right from my childhood, our family was entirely immersed in classical music. We hardly ever listened to popular songs or anything else. There was always the sound of classical instruments filling our home. When I was about four years old, I started learning music under the guidance of B.S. Bali ji in Jodhpur, starting with the sitar. Even at that young age, I found music very intriguing. It feels really nice to think about what I was doing at that age. But yes, my love for music, especially classical music, came to me naturally, and I’m truly grateful to my family for their support in this journey.
Surbhi Sapru: What is the true power of Sufi music, and why does it attract people so much?
Ragini Rainu: Well, you see, Sufi music has this incredible power that goes beyond just the sound. It’s about the messages and wisdom conveyed through the lyrics. When Sufi saints wrote poetry centuries ago, what they said was so true and powerful that it still holds weight today. Their words had as much impact then as they do now. It’s pretty amazing, isn’t it? And then there’s the poetry itself. It’s like packed with meaning and depth. Each Sufi poet had their own style and way of expressing things, which makes it really diverse and interesting. Personally, I feel like when you listen to mystic saints singing, whether it’s Sufi music or the works of poets like Kabir Das or Meera, it’s like they’re sharing a piece of their soul with you. I believe that if you’re into mystic saints, whether they’re Sufis or others, and you really connect with their songs, it kind of changes you. It’s like their experiences and wisdom somehow become a part of your own journey.
Surbhi Sapru: How do you connect with the lives and experiences of the various saints whose poetry you compose or sing? What inspires you about them, such as Meera’s struggles or Kabir’s teachings on detachment and self-surrender?
Ragini Rainu: When I sing the poetry of saints like Baba Bulleh Shah, it’s more than just singing. It’s about feeling their emotions and connecting with their experiences. For example, when I sing Baba Bulleh Shah’s verses, it feels like I’m experiencing the same emotions he did. It’s as if I can feel the pain or the joy he felt when he wrote those words. And when I connect with their experiences, it’s like I’m transported to their world for a moment.
The thing is, the poetry of these saints is really special because it speaks to the soul. Whether it’s Kabir’s teachings on detachment or Meera’s devotion to Krishna, there’s something timeless and universal about their messages. And when I sing their poetry, I try to convey those messages in a way that resonates with people today, especially with younger generations who might not be familiar with these saints. So, I try to connect with them on a personal level and bring their experiences to life through music.
In my opinion, it’s important for people to experience the depth and beauty of this spiritual music because it has the power to transform lives. And when I perform, whether it’s on stage or in a more intimate setting, I try to create an atmosphere where people can connect with the music and with each other. It’s about more than just singing; it’s about creating a shared experience that touches people’s hearts and souls.
Surbhi Sapru: When you visit Kashmir, you often mention the great saints like Tulsidas and Baba Bulleh Shah. What significance do these saints hold for you? Can you share a special experience or lesson you’ve learned from them, and how did your connection with them influence you?
Ragini Rainu: When I visit Kashmir, I experience the profound and inspiring influence of saints like Tulsidas and Baba Bulleh Shah. Their teachings and ways of sharing music deeply affect my life.
I remember the first time I met my spiritual mentor, Guruji. I was just 16 years old, and my father introduced me to him through some mutual friends. At that time, I wanted to learn from a renowned classical singer. But when my father met Guruji, he was deeply impressed by his personality, and something inside me told me that I needed to learn from him. And that’s when my journey with him began. After completing my 12th grade, I enrolled in Delhi University. And, when I was 20, I received initiation from Guruji, which brought about a profound change in me. Suddenly, I felt a strong sense of detachment, and my perspective on life changed.
During the 15 years I spent closely with Guruji, I had the opportunity to understand his musical compositions and spiritual teachings. For example, Baba Bulleh Shah, a saint poet, experienced a transformative moment when his guru took back the robe he had given him, leading him to compose many poignant verses. Overall, my journey with these saints has been very enriching. They teach me valuable lessons about life, spirituality, and music, and influence the way I express myself through music.
Surbhi Sapru: Can you tell us about the challenges you faced while learning and teaching Sufism? Why did you feel uncomfortable during the meditation sessions?
Ragini Rainu: Well, I was very young when I began, and sitting still for long periods was hard for me. I preferred to be active, so meditation felt tedious initially.
Surbhi Sapru: Did you eventually find meditation beneficial?
Ragini Rainu: Yes, over time, I realized the importance of meditation in Sufism. It helps in developing inner peace and focus, which are essential for spiritual growth.
Surbhi Sapru: Can you share any memorable experiences from your learning journey?
Ragini Rainu: Absolutely! One memorable experience was when I got the opportunity to spend time with renowned masters in England and India. Learning directly from them and witnessing their dedication to their practice was truly inspiring.
Surbhi Sapru: How did these experiences influence your understanding of Sufism?
Ragini Rainu: They taught me that Sufism is not just about rituals but also about dedication, perseverance, and surrendering to the process. It’s a deeply spiritual journey that requires patience and faith in one’s teacher and oneself.
Surbhi Sapru: What advice would you give to someone interested in learning Sufism?
Ragini Rainu: I would advise them to approach it with an open heart and mind, be patient with themselves, and trust in the guidance of their teacher. Sufism is not just about learning techniques; it’s about embodying its principles in everyday life.
Surbhi Sapru: Tell us about dedicated students.
Ragini Rainu: Dedicated students not only follow instructions but also work harder to excel in the direction of excellence. Emphasis should be placed on dedication and hard work to achieve success.
Surbhi Sapru: What changes have occurred in music and education over time?
Ragini Rainu: Previously, the focus was on patience and quality, while nowadays, there seems to be a trend towards instant results.
Surbhi Sapru: How can the importance of perseverance and adaptability be understood?
Ragini Rainu: Perseverance refers to the ability to deal with the challenges and obstacles of the path, while adaptability involves adjusting and accepting change. These qualities are important to understand life’s journey and achieve personal development.
Surbhi Sapru: How should the concept of femininity be viewed?
Ragini Rainu: It is also necessary to express one’s self-respect. Embracing femininity does not mean compromising one’s dignity or self-worth.
Surbhi Sapru: What advice do you have for women regarding personal power and identity?
Ragini Rainu: Embrace your true nature and personal power fully while also acknowledging the importance of maintaining your identity in the face of challenges and adversities. Emphasis should be placed on staying true to oneself while on life’s journey.
